President of Al-Mustaqbal University Participates in the UNIMED General Assembly at the University of Barcelona and Discusses Erasmus+ Programs and Academic Mobility Barcelona, ​​Spain Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, participated in the General Assembly of the Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED), hosted by the University of Barcelona in Spain on October 7–8, 2026. The General Assembly coincided with the celebration of UNIMED’s 35th anniversary, drawing broad participation from presidents and representatives of universities and academic institutions across the Mediterranean basin and Europe. The meetings involved discussions and the approval of key themes and strategic priorities for the Union’s action plan. These priorities focused on advancing higher education and scientific research through the following areas: 1. Governance of Higher Education: Strengthening management frameworks and good governance within academic institutions. 2. Digital Education: Supporting digital transformation and developing educational environments and modern technologies. 3. Intercultural Dialogue: Fostering cultural understanding and cooperation among the peoples and institutions of the Euro-Mediterranean region. 4. Employability: Enhancing student skills to align with the demands of the modern labor market. 5. Higher Education in Emergencies and Fragility: Supporting educational continuity and providing learning opportunities amidst critical conditions and crises. 6. Sustainable Development: Activating the role of universities in achieving Sustainable Development Goals and protecting the environment. Review of Erasmus+ programs and academic mobility: The assembly proceedings included special sessions reviewing proposals and the vision for the "Erasmus+ 2028–2034" programs, as well as mechanisms to enhance unified academic mobility for students and faculty (Student and Staff Mobility Actions). Discussions also covered support for capacity building, international partnerships, the provision of Master’s scholarships, and "Jean Monnet" programs. It is worth noting that Al-Mustaqbal University is the only private university in Iraq to have successfully secured a "Jean Monnet" grant—accredited under European Union programs—reflecting its academic excellence and active presence in international higher education projects. During his participation, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi emphasized Al-Mustaqbal University’s commitment to active engagement in international partnerships and the implementation of best academic practices. These efforts aim to strengthen the university's standing in international forums and support national strategies for educational and research development.
