Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are among the modern tools contributing to the development of environmental monitoring and data analysis methods, particularly in light of the growing challenges associated with climate change, water scarcity, and environmental pollution. These technologies enable the processing of large volumes of data collected from satellites, monitoring stations, and ground-based sensors, helping to better understand environmental changes and identify problems more accurately.
AI applications rely on Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms to analyze satellite imagery, monitor land cover changes, assess water and air quality, and predict the risks of droughts and floods. They can also be used to analyze hydrological data, monitor water levels, and track changes in water resources, thereby supporting engineering planning and improving the management of water infrastructure.
In Iraq, these technologies are particularly important in light of the challenges posed by water scarcity, climate change, and the degradation of certain ecosystems. They can be used to monitor changes in water bodies and agricultural lands, analyze drought indicators, and support decision-making related to natural resource management and the reduction of environmental risks.
Despite their considerable potential, AI applications face several challenges related to data accuracy and availability, the need for reliable and interpretable models, and the provision of appropriate technical expertise and infrastructure. Therefore, the effective implementation of these technologies requires integrating field data, digital analysis, and scientific validation to ensure accurate and reliable results.
In conclusion, integrating artificial intelligence into environmental monitoring and data analysis represents an important step toward promoting the sustainable management of natural resources and developing engineering solutions to address environmental challenges. This approach contributes to environmental protection and supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
