Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, participated in the proceedings of the UNIMED General Assembly 2026, hosted by the University of Barcelona in Spain on 7–8 October 2026. The event brought together university presidents and representatives of academic and educational institutions from the Mediterranean and European regions, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the Union’s establishment. The General Assembly discussed the strategic priorities of the Union’s action plan aimed at advancing higher education and scientific research and strengthening academic cooperation among universities. The discussions addressed several key areas, including higher education governance, digital education, intercultural dialogue, enhancing graduate employability, ensuring educational continuity during emergencies and crises, and promoting sustainable development and the role of universities in achieving its goals. The meetings also reviewed the future directions of the Erasmus+ programme for the 2028–2034 period and explored mechanisms to enhance academic mobility for students and faculty members, expand scientific exchange opportunities, build institutional capacities, and develop international partnerships. Discussions further covered the Jean Monnet Actions and academic grants associated with European cooperation. As part of its efforts to strengthen its international academic presence, Al-Mustaqbal University is the only private university in Iraq to have received a Jean Monnet grant under European Union programmes. This achievement reflects the University’s active engagement in international academic initiatives and its commitment to expanding scientific cooperation with universities and educational institutions. Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi reaffirmed Al-Mustaqbal University’s commitment to strengthening its academic openness to global universities and expanding its participation in international cooperation and exchange programmes. These efforts aim to improve the quality of education and scientific research, enhance the skills of students and academic staff, and strengthen the University’s position at both regional and international levels, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
