Wisdom and religion are among the most important pillars upon which human life is built. Wisdom enlightens the mind and guides thought towards what is right, while religion guides human beings towards the path of truth and goodness, providing them with moral principles that help them distinguish between right and wrong. When wisdom and religion come together, individuals become better able to understand life, face difficulties, and treat others with justice and compassion. There is no doubt that true religion is expected to encourage human beings to adopt a wise approach to life, both in understanding and in conduct. This is because religion is a message from the Creator God to humanity. The Creator, who possesses knowledge, power, and free will, must necessarily be wise, for He is the source and origin of wisdom. He created human beings with the capacities for knowledge, power, and choice, as well as an innate inclination towards wisdom. Therefore, His message must be consistent with His attributes and with the nature upon which human beings were created. I have found that religion indeed fulfils this role, as it places great emphasis on developing the human inclination towards wisdom by encouraging individuals to cultivate wisdom within themselves and providing them with wise teachings that protect them from error in this life. In fact, informing human beings of two significant truths—the existence of God, who cares for humanity and possesses particular attributes, and the continuation of human existence after this life, which depends on their insight and conduct in the present world—serves this very purpose. It enables individuals to ensure that their actions and behaviour are consistent with the truths that surround them and are important to their lives, just as parents teach their children, and teachers instruct their students, about the realities they need to understand. In the Holy Qur’an, we repeatedly find reminders that this life is governed by established laws and principles that lead human beings either to happiness or to hardship and misery, and that correct guidance in life leads to the happiness that life makes possible for humanity. As Almighty Allah says: “Whoever is granted wisdom has indeed been granted abundant good, but none will take heed except people of understanding.” The Holy Qur’an also emphasizes that the mission of the messengers was fundamentally intended to teach human beings wisdom. Almighty Allah says: “Just as We have sent among you a messenger from yourselves, reciting Our verses to you, purifying you, teaching you the Book and wisdom, and teaching you what you did not know.” Allah, Glorified and Exalted, also bestowed additional wisdom upon the servants He sent as messengers, enabling them to fulfil this wise mission effectively. Regarding the family of Abraham, He says: “We gave the family of Abraham the Book and wisdom.” Concerning David, He says: “And We granted him wisdom and decisive judgment.” Regarding Jesus, He says: “And when I taught you the Book, wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel.” And concerning the Messenger of Islam, He says: “Allah has sent down to you the Book and wisdom and taught you what you did not know. And the favour of Allah upon you has always been great.” Allah also commanded the messengers to call people to His path through wisdom. Almighty Allah says: “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in the best manner. Indeed, your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best who is rightly guided.” The religious teachings concerning belief and conduct have also been established in accordance with the broader understanding of wisdom. Almighty Allah says: “And We certainly gave Luqman wisdom, saying, ‘Be grateful to Allah.’ Whoever is grateful is grateful for the benefit of his own soul, and whoever is ungrateful, then indeed Allah is Self-Sufficient and Praiseworthy.” He also says: “That is part of what your Lord has revealed to you of wisdom. And do not set up another deity alongside Allah, lest you be cast into Hell, condemned and rejected.” Consequently, the religious texts indicate that belief in Allah and His messages strengthens the spirit of wisdom within human beings, as demonstrated by the lives of many righteous individuals. The wisdom of a believer reflects the strength of their faith, while a lack of wisdom may indicate the opposite. For this reason, Islamic teachings describe the believer as discerning and rational, someone who approaches matters with insight and does not allow the same mistake to deceive them twice. It also follows that a believer’s wisdom plays an important role in receiving and understanding religion properly, whether in relation to its fundamental principles and general values, the religious rulings based upon them, or the practical application of those principles and rulings. It also helps individuals identify their personal, family, and social responsibilities in accordance with religious guidance. A suitable inner disposition makes individuals more receptive to wise principles and better equipped to apply them appropriately, thoughtfully, and correctly in different circumstances.
